All math students, undergraduate and graduate, major and minor, are invited to a party on March 14th, the International Day of Mathematics, in the amazing home of Preeti and Matt, indoor and by the pool. This is a great alternative for an out-of-town spring break! March 14 is the day the world celebrates our favorite irrational number, Pi, (as the date is written 3.14, the first digits of Pi …). It is celebrated by mathematicians, scientists, and enthusiasts around the world. It was officially recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2009, and it just happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.… What can you expect ? Matt Denesuk is the head of Data Analytics & AI at Royal Caribbean, the world’s premier cruise company, and he works to apply math (and data) to nearly everything the company does. He is a great fan of math history. Expect various kinds of fruit pies, pizza pies and more … It typically includes informal discussions of the significance of Pi, and Pi/math-related jokes or anecdotes are also always welcome and encouraged. The celebration is from 5:30-7:30 PM. The address will be provided once you RSVP in the affirmative. Pi-day Event sponsored by Mina Teicher & Matt Denesuk
There will be a raffle for pi-related paraphernalia and other gifts based on statistical distributions. We’ll also provide plenty of pi-related temporary tattoos, to decorate yourself with pi-based imagery as you see fit.
